Right back in the 1880's during 'The battle of the currents' Thomas Edison strode to make sure that DC was the current of choice, whilst George Westinghouse who, along with Nikola Tesla, was arguing in favor of AC.  After that time AC was largly adopted, mainly due to it's ability to be transmitted over large distances without huge losses - something that DC was unable to do

Since then, back into the 21st century we are again championing DC current in order to take properties completely off-grid.  The difference between the 1880's and today is that we now have the means to generate power on site, rather than from a power station miles away.  Not only that, but the abilty to store excess power generated has also become a reality within the financial reach of most people
